Most tree removal calls in Port St. Lucie are one of three things: a laurel oak that's started dropping limbs or shows a hollow at the base, a slash pine leaning toward the house after the last storm, or a tree that's simply in the way of a pool, an addition or a canal seawall. The laurel oak problem on the Treasure Coast
Laurel oaks (Quercus laurifolia) were the default street and yard tree as Port St. Lucie built out because they grow fast and look like live oaks when they're young. They aren't. A laurel oak lives 50 to 70 years, hollows from the inside as it ages, and fails without much warning — a limb on the driveway one month, the whole crown in the pool cage the next hurricane. If you have a big oak near the house with a fluted trunk, shelf fungus at the base, or a hollow you can put a hand into, get it looked at. If it's a live oak (Quercus virginiana) with a broad, low, spreading canopy, it's probably good for another century — and we'll tell you so instead of selling you a removal you don't need. Do I need a permit to cut down a tree in Port St. Lucie?
For a tree on your own platted single-family lot, usually no — the city's tree-preservation rules in Chapter 154 exempt those lots, and non-native fruit trees aren't counted at all. Protected trees on vacant lots, commercial property or during land-clearing do need a permit, and unpermitted removal of a protected tree carries a 3-to-1 replacement and double the fee. We confirm with Planning & Zoning before we cut so you're never the one holding a violation.
Can you remove a tree close to my pool cage or seawall?
Yes. A lot of Port St. Lucie removals are within twenty feet of a screen enclosure or right on a canal bank. We rig each section down on ropes or lift it with a crane so nothing touches the aluminum or the seawall.
Will you remove a tree the HOA wants gone?
