A ground-out stump is the difference between a finished yard and a trip hazard sprouting suckers. We grind 8 to 12 inches below grade, chase the surface roots, and leave you a hole you can fill and sod.
Grinding a stump is quick, clean and a lot less disruptive than digging one out. Our grinder chews the stump and the flare 8 to 12 inches below grade — deeper if you're planting a new tree in the same spot — and we chase the big surface roots that trip mowers and lift pavers. The grindings can be raked back into the hole as fill or hauled off if you want clean soil for sod. Either way you're left with a level spot, not a crater with roots sticking out.
We grind stumps we removed and stumps someone else left behind. Sandy Treasure Coast soil grinds easily, but old oak and sabal-palm root balls near seawalls, septic drainfields and irrigation lines need care — we locate what we can and grind around what shouldn't be touched.

Questions we get about stump grinding
How much does stump grinding cost in Port St. Lucie?
Most stumps run $75 to $600, priced by the diameter across the root flare at ground level. A 15-inch stump is quick; a 40-inch oak flare with big surface roots takes longer and costs more. We measure and price it on site, and it's often cheaper bundled with the removal.
How deep do you grind?
Eight to twelve inches below grade for sod and general clearing, and deeper — usually 18 inches or more — if you're planting a new tree in the same spot and need to get past the old root crown.
Do you remove the roots too?
We chase and grind the large surface roots that trip mowers, lift pavers or sprout suckers. The fine feeder roots left in the soil simply rot away; they won't regrow into a tree once the crown is gone.
Will grinding damage my seawall, septic or sprinklers?
It can if we grind blind, which is why we don't. We locate irrigation heads, septic drainfields and anything near a canal seawall first and grind around what shouldn't be touched. Point out anything you know about and we'll work around it.
Can you grind a stump another company left?
Yes — a good share of our stump jobs are cleanups after someone else removed the tree and left the stump. Send a photo with a tape measure across it and we can usually quote it fast.
